Apelu Island Cafe
1710 E Little Creek Rd #104, Norfolk, VA 23518A Nice Getaway to Get Excellent Spam!
If you're searching for a little island getaway in Norfolk, VA, then this place got that laid back vibe you have been looking for.
Tropical themed, this is a great place for all sorts of refreshments and coffee and a unique entree you can not get simply anywhere.
A young married couple, especially the wife, encouraged me to try this dish. It's spam on top of rice wrapped in seaweed.
Even though the ingredients were easy and simple to understand, the combination of flavors were far beyond your standard understanding of deliciousness. Pure umami!
The porky taste of the spam blends well with the seaweed giving it a certain sushi-like flavor edge and the rice added some nice texture.
However, the wife wanted me to try the sequel. And yes, it was an upgrade because my second helping not only had the spam, the rice, the seaweed, but it also had a piece of fried egg. That was the deal breaker!
Imagine having a nice hand held breakfast with a little bit of that, once again, sushi taste that some people love! I know I'm one of those! But, with the wholesome comforting goodness of the egg like you're a kid enjoying your breakfast cooked by your mom growing up! Yes, the egg was that outstanding! It wasn't overcooked and it was a great complement to the spam along with the rice! Definitely, this is my preferred way of eating this meal!
Also, the wife surprised me with a nice looking fruit cup which was delightfully tart, but not overwhelming, taste wise. The blueberries were not bitter or sour, but were sweet along with the slices of strawberries which were above a delicious cream tucked inside a light crust. Really impressive dessert and can be great with coffee.
With all that said, I almost forgot about my drink. No, I didn't order coffee. I got a well mixed peach mango. It was sweet and refreshing and it can cool you down!
Overall, an impressively tasteful delicious meal!
